March 2009 Argentine Tango Seminar with Avik and Patricia:

Musicality, Improvisation, and Expression

Tango is an improvisational dance in which we are always striving for freedom in our bodies to move in a creative way that fits the music, our partners, and the space around us. Achieving that freedom demands hours of practice, but our practice sometimes focuses narrowly on particular movements, neglecting other essential qualities of the dance. While such practice has been the basis of our past seminars, this one will take a different perspective by considering how to craft the experience of a 3-minute tango, or even a tanda or two. In particular, we'll look at various aspects of musicality (rhythms, phrasing, flow, etc.) and work on moving in ways that best express the music. Time permitting, we'll cover not only tango but also vals and milonga.

The nature of this seminar allows us to offer the class to students of nearly all levels--basically, if you can get through a tango without stepping on your partner's feet, you're welcome to join! If you plan to attend, please register online so we know how many people to expect.

This seminar starts on March 5, 2009. Cost: $50 for 6 weeks ($40 students). If you are new to our classes, please stop by for a free trial class.
